Races info
Stratoni is a seaside village located at the innermost part of Ierissos Bay, with a population of more than 1,200 residents (according to the 2011 census). Its establishment as a settlement dates back to the late 19th century and is closely linked to the mining activity in the area. The rich deposits of mixed sulfide ores, known since antiquity and the Byzantine era, have been the village’s main source of wealth.
Since then, people from the surrounding areas and other parts of Greece began settling in Stratoni to work in the mines. The population grew significantly due to the influx of refugees who arrived after the Asia Minor Catastrophe. In 1932, the village suffered extensive damage from an earthquake centered in Ierissos Bay. In the following years, it was almost entirely rebuilt.
The area has been inhabited since ancient times, and mining activity in Stratoni and the surrounding villages dates back to around 600 BC. Excavations in 1962 revealed that Stratoni was built on the site of the ancient city of Stratonike. This city was also mentioned by Claudius Ptolemy, although he mistakenly placed it in the Singitic Gulf.
