The front zipper may be open to any length, provided that:
(1) the zipper always remains attached at the bottom, and (2) the upper part of the suit always covers the shoulders.
The suit must be fully closed (zipper completely up) in the final 100 meters before the finish line.
1. What Is Allowed with the Zipper
• The zipper at the front of the suit may be opened as much as the athlete wishes during the race, provided that:
-
the zipper remains attached at the base (bottom) of the suit at all times during the race, and
-
the upper part of the suit always covers the athlete’s shoulders.
In other words: you may keep the zipper open as much as you like for comfort/cooling, but it must not drop below the shoulders or become completely detached at the bottom.
2. When the Zipper Must Be Closed
Finish
• The zipper must be fully closed upon entering the final 100 meters before the finish line.
-
This means that if you had the zipper open for most of the race, you must fully close it before the final 100 m, bringing it all the way up to the sternum.
Exception During the Run
• In the final phase of the run (last ~200 m), before reaching the final 100 m to the finish, the zipper must already be pulled up — meaning it must be in a position that covers the upper body.
In simple terms:
• During most of the race, you may keep the zipper open,
• but in the last ~200 m of the run you must pull it up, and
• in the final 100 m before the finish it must be completely closed.
