World Triathlon encourages all the athletes to undergo a periodic health evaluation (PHE) and to undergo a pre-participation evaluation (PPE) prior to engaging in competitive sport
1. Periodic Health Evaluation (PHE)
What it is
A Periodic Health Evaluation is a regular medical check-up performed at repeated time intervals.
Purpose according to the World Triathlon philosophy:
- early detection of cardiac problems
- assessment of physical fitness
- prevention of sudden medical incidents during competition
- health monitoring of high-intensity athletes
Usually includes:
- cardiological screening (ECG / stress test)
- medical history review
- orthopedic evaluation
- basic blood tests
Particularly important in triathlon due to:
- long race duration
- thermal stress
- combination of three endurance sports
2. Pre-Participation Evaluation (PPE)
What it is
A medical evaluation conducted before participation in competitions.
Conducted:
- before the start of a competitive season, or
- prior to participation in official competitions.
Objective:
-
to confirm that the athlete is medically fit for competitive activity.
Includes:
- medical clearance
- injury screening
- exercise risk assessment
3. Why this regulation exists in triathlon
Triathlon is considered a sport with increased physiological load because:
- swimming carries the highest risk of sudden incidents,
- dehydration and overheating are common,
- fatigue accumulates across multiple disciplines.
World Triathlon emphasizes prevention rather than reaction to emergency events.
4. Summary
- Athletes are strongly advised to undergo regular medical evaluations (PHE).
- Τhey should obtain medical clearance before competing (PPE).
- The goal is safety and reduction of medical risks, not the imposition of penalties.
