A few words
The municipality of Epidaurus (Epidavros) is a historic region of Argolida in the eastern side, located at the foot of mountains Arachnaio, Premium and Tithio, where -according to mythology- Asclepius was born. The strategic location of Epidaurus, and especially Asklipio contributed to the remarkable growth of the city. The residents concentrated on shipping. The first settlement belongs to the prehistoric period and is located 12 km from the town of Ancient Epidaurus.
The name Epidaurus was taken by its third king, Epidaurus, who was a hero of the region, son of Argos and Evadnis. According to Homer, Epidaurus took part in the Trojan War having the two sons of Asclepius (Podalirius and Machaona) as leaders. Epidaurus also took part at the Medic Wars and was an ally of Sparta in the Peloponnesian War, which is directly linked to Epidaurus War, which took place between them and Argos, a neighbouring city which was Athens ally. Epidaurus became famous throughout Greece, because of the Asklipieio, with the sanctuary of Asclepius, which dominated the city since the end of fifth and early fourth century. In recent history, Epidaurus became a unique symbol during the Greek revolution with the two historical assemblies: the first on 20 – 12 – 1821 which proclaimed the independence of the Greek nation and the second in March 1826.
Ligourio, amphitheatrically situated on the south of the hill Agioi Taxiarches, overlooking Parnonas and the other mountains of Arkadia, has a population of about 3000. The area, where people are mainly occupied in agriculture and stock-raising, is filled with verdant gardens, orchards and olive groves. Ligourio has a strong presence in financial life with its marble quarries and small industries of wood, iron and ceramic processing. One of the main occupations of the inhabitants is also tourism, with the nearby Temple of Asklepios and the Epidaurus Festival (“Epidauria”), which is famous worldwide, contributing greatly to the touristic development of the district.

Ancient Theater of Epidaurus
The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus is considered the greatest ancient Greek theater in terms of acoustics and aesthetics. Its capacity is 13,000 spectators and is located in the area of Epidaurus Asklepios, just 14 km from the village Lygourio. The theater, a strong element of the ancient Greek religion, was built in the late fourth century BC on the slopes of Kynortyou to entertain the patients of Asklepios. It operated for several centuries and in 395 AD Goths invasion of the Peloponnese caused serious damage to Asklepion.
Small Theater of Epidaurus
The Small Theater of Epidaurus or “shell of the Argosaronic Gulf”, was excavated in 1971 after 23 centuries of silence. It is located in the Acropolis of the ancient city of Epidaurus at the South-Western slope and it has a capacity of 2000 seats. It was built in the 4th century, with the sponsorship of prominent rulers and upper class people, in honor of the God Dionysus and underwent profound changes during the Roman occupation. A remarkable characteristic of the theatre are the inscriptions which consist a real-living museum.
The Sunken City
In the shallow waters of Kalymnios beach, a small part of the ancient city has submerged. One could see the remnants in the waters either by boat or swimming. In some places the ancient breakwater is still preserved. It is worth diving at a depth of only two meters to marvel the well-preserved ruins. It is a fact that the sight will leave you filled with awe.
Church of the Assumption of Mary
Ligourio’s inhabitants are deeply religious, as indicated by the marvelous churches found in the area.
The Church of the Assumption of Mary (Panagitsa): In the central square of the old village a visitor may find this Post-Byzantine temple, a significant edifice of the second Venetian domination period (1685-1715).
